peerspective linux installation instructions

PeerSpective 1.2 supports Linux machines with the Gnome desktop manager. To install PeerSpective on your Linux machine, follow the instructions below:

Requirements:

• Gnome desktop manager

• Skype must be installed

• vtun must be installed (on Debian, run apt-get vtun as root)

• You must have sudo on your machine

Installation Instructions:

• Check that Skype is running. PeerSpective uses Skype to communicate with your friends.

• Download PeerSpective Tarball. Extract the tarball to your favorite location.

• Run PeerSpective. Navigate to the this directory and double-click Launcher.jar, or, from the command line, run java -jar Launcher.jar

• Make PeerSpective run at login. If you'd like PeerSpective to restart on login, edit your .gnomerc file to include the line cd path_to_jar && java -jar Launcher.jar

• Enter your password. This is necessary to set up the virtual Ethernet device which PeerSpective uses to communicate.

• Allow PeerSpective to talk to Skype. Skype will pop up a notification asking for an authorization. Select Remember this selection and click yes.

  

• Configure the proxy. This tells your web browser to use PeerSpective. Currently, only Firefox has been tested on Linux:

  FIREFOX

  • In Firefox, Preferences from the Edit, and select Advanced.

  • Select the Network tab and click on the Settings... button.

    

  • Select the option Automatic proxy configuration URL: and enter http://localhost:8000/proxy.pac into the field.

    

• You're now connected! Run a Google search to test PeerSpective.

• Finally, set up your bookmarks so that you can use the recommended pages feature. Instructions for doing this.
